Migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 10: Time is running out

January 14, 2020. If this date isn't already circled in your calendar, it's high time you did. This day marks the end of Microsoft's support for Windows 7. This means that, in most cases, the time has come for businesses to migrate to Windows 10, or at least plan for it as soon as possible. Time is running out.

Yes, you love Windows 7, you've been using it for 10 years now and you've gotten used to it, and we agree with you. This version of the Windows operating system was excellent in every way. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and now it's time to make way for Windows 10.
After reading this article, you will understand why you should migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and, most importantly, what to consider before making the transition.
Why migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 10?
Microsoft offers two types of support for its operating systems: global support and security support. The first type ended five years ago, so it's the second that we're talking about.
This means that the American giant will no longer offer bug or security fixes, leaving devices based on Windows 7 vulnerable to cyberattacks .

Also note that the end of security support also applies to Windows Server 2008 R2. If the transition hasn't already begun, it's even more urgent to address this situation.
Are there any other alternatives to migrating to Windows 10?
There are indeed other options available to you, although they are relatively limited and not very advantageous.
Opt for extended support
Microsoft is first offering you the option to pay for extended security support through 2023. For $50 USD per computer for the first year, you can postpone the issue and remain safe. This price will double in 2022, to $100 USD, and again in 2023, to a price of $200 USD.
Unless you have software that is incompatible with Windows 10, known as legacy software, we don't recommend this option. In any case, in three years you'll have to invest in Windows 10 licenses, which currently cost $200 USD for the Pro version.
Migrate to Windows 8.1
You also have the option to reduce your investment and opt for Windows 8.1. However, we do not recommend this choice.
First of all, Microsoft no longer sells licenses for this version, forcing you to acquire them through resellers, which can be risky.
Furthermore, you're just postponing the problem once again, not to mention the fact that you'll have to deal with the operating system's unintuitive interface. Remember that Microsoft offered Windows 10 to all its Windows 8.1 users.
Things to consider before migrating to Windows 10
Now you're ready to take the plunge. However, there are some technical and management aspects you need to consider before you can properly migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Minimum specifications
If you want to save money on hardware, you may be able to upgrade your current computers. However, you need to make sure they meet the technical specifications needed to run Windows 10. Check out the minimum specifications .
In short, your computer must have a 1 gigahertz (GHz) processor and 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM. However, we strongly recommend upgrading to computers with at least 2 GB of RAM and opting for the 64-bit version of Windows 10.
Your machines must also have enough disk space to complete the update. You must have at least 32 GB of disk space, otherwise the operating system will not install.
Note that these are minimum specifications. If you barely meet them, it may be time to invest in new equipment. There are suppliers that offer very high-quality refurbished equipment, which can represent a significant cost savings and an environmentally friendly gesture.
Migrate to Windows 10 gradually
Migrating part of your workforce from Windows 7 to Windows 10 before transitioning your entire workforce can be a worthwhile strategy.
For example, you can do this with a team you know is comfortable with change, and they can represent the test group. Once they're well established within that group, you can do it for all your employees.
Your employees who use Windows 10 will also be able to assist those who are less comfortable with technological developments.
Preparing for change
Technological change invariably involves process change. Your workforce will need to be prepared for this transition and you will need to support them throughout the migration.
Announce in advance that the change will take place, if it hasn't already, and make sure you provide them with the necessary tools so they can take full advantage of what you're making available to them. A good way to do this is to offer training to your teams. This is a service that Nexxo IT Solutions offers its clients.
